Assistant Controller | Calgary

Position Summary |
The Assistant Controller plays a key role in managing the company's financial operations, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and efficiency in financial reporting. This position supports the Controller, Corporate Reporting in overseeing accounting functions, preparing financial statements, and managing budget and forecasting activities. Additionally, the role provides financial analysis to support strategic initiatives and key decision-making.
This position requires a detail-oriented professional with strong analytical and problem-solving skills. The Assistant Controller will collaborate closely with the accounting team and the Property Management team to ensure accurate reporting, financial integrity, and effective cash management. Regular work hours are Monday to Friday, 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM.

Key Responsibilities:​​

Assist in the preparation and review of financial statements, ensuring accuracy and compliance with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS)

Preparation of annual corporate and partnership tax returns
-
Ensure all financial transactions, including revenue and expense accruals, are accurately recorded and auditable.

Maintain reconciled general ledger accounts to support timely and precise reporting
-
Assist in implementing accounting policies and procedures, identifying and resolving accounting issues, and ensuring compliance with applicable regulations and industry standards

Assist in developing and maintaining key analytics to monitor financial and operational trends

Assist in identifying and implementing process improvements to enhance financial efficiency and reporting.

Ensure adherence to company policies, lender requirements, and investor reporting standards.

Work through complex transactions to document and complete journal entries
-
Identify and resolve accounting issues and discrepancies, and communicate with stakeholders as needed

Assist the Controller with preparation of internal cash flow projections and planning
-
Assist in updating cash forecasts and management reports to support financial decision-making
-
Assist in effectively managing and communicating cash flow-related issues. This includes the accurate and timely preparation of cash flow statements, management of receivables, payables, cash balances, control mechanisms, and timely deposits of all funds.

Prepare annual budgets working papers and assist with presentation materials

Perform cost analysis of operational results compared to budgets and forecasts, identifying key variances and insights

Support long-term financial planning and forecasting

Assist in internal and external audits, ensuring compliance with accounting standards

Assist in the supervision of daily accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll.

Develop and maintain relationships with external auditors, tax advisors, and other service providers as needed

Support financial due diligence on potential acquisitions

Assist in the development of financial strategies and long-term business plans
-
Support cross-functional teams in financial decision-making and reporting.

Collaborate with internal stakeholders to gather information for accounting and reporting, and support leadership with ad hoc and regular reporting requests

Qualifications |​

Completion of a recognized accounting designation (CPA)

Minimum five (5) years of financial reporting experience in commercial real estate (preferred)

Previous public accounting experience would be an asset

Ability to work successfully within a team environment and independently

Excellent organizational, time management and communication skills

Intermediate to advanced working knowledge of MS Excel

Detail oriented and highly organized

Excellent critical thinking skills

Maintain highest standard of work ethics and trustworthiness

Proficient in Yardi software would be considered an asset

Successful City of Calgary Police Information/Criminal Record Check
